Test information

Todaysgolfer has conducted an extensive golf ball test in 2020. For this they use a golf robot from PXG. Both Launch Monitors GC Quad and Trackman were used for the tests. The test in Arizona lasted a total of five days and 1260 balls were hit with the robot.

Driver results

With the driver, spin does not yet play a major role. Rather, one estimates if one would reach more distance with the same shot. However, the statistics quickly show that all types of ball achieve a similar distance. What is striking, however, is the decrease in the spread of a 5-piece ball compared to a 2-piece ball.

Now we turn to the individual golf ball brands. The ranks 1-3 were found from the 3-piece layer onwards. However, the Srixon AD333 is not exceptionally bad, but is in the average range in each case. Golfers with a wide tee shot have to consider the spread, because a fairway is on average 30 metres wide.

In conclusion, it can be said that the TaylorMade TP5x scores points for distance and dispersion. The Titleist Pro V1x shines with an excellent dispersion and yet a certain distance.

Statistics: Average of 36 balls hit, 3 swing speeds (185, 160 and 135 km/h), 3 different drivers (9° PXG 0811 X Gen2, 10.5° PXG 0811 X Gen2 and 12° PXG 0811 X Gen2).

7 Iron Results

When it comes more to accuracy and the overall package, the 7 iron is a good measurement. In general, it can be said that there are no extreme variations between the different ball types.

The distances are in a range of 4.4 metres, which is relatively little. From this point of view, the awarding of medals is of secondary importance.

However, there is a striking difference in the spread. The distance of 145 metres corresponds to a par 3, so the tee shot should definitely land on the green. The Callaway Chrome Soft has a high value with a spread of 10 metres. If we compare this with the average area of a green (approx. 550 m², which corresponds to 23 x 23 metres), the spread is still acceptable. Since the greens are usually not square, it can be tight. In general, however, the difference to the other golf ball brands is striking.

Pitching wedge results

Now it is a question of accuracy. It can be seen below that all golf ball layers perform the same.

Since no major deviations are evident in the distances. In the following, the spin as well as the dispersion left-right and the dispersion front-back were analysed.

Spin is of enormous relevance, as a 100-metre shot with backspin should also stay at 100 metres. In the pros, the balls always go 2-3 metres backwards. In any case, the balls should absorb the backspin. It is obvious that the Titleist Pro V1x and the Srixon Z-Star XV achieved very good values.

When looking at the dispersion, it is quickly apparent that the Titleist Pro V1x achieved top values. So if you want to pitch the ball 100 metres, the ball will also fly 100 metres and land at the desired point within 1 metre!
